Gear Head 1.3 MP WebCam … does not have USB microphone, January 11, 2012

I wish they’d tell you everything you need to know about a product, especially when it’s on the box itself, but Amazon’s listing for this webcam neglects to tell you that you need to have an open 3.5mm incoming microphone audio port. The cable has a USB portion for the video, and a separate lead for the microphone input. They also don’t tell you that the USB port you connect it to has to be within 5 inches of the microphone port (unless you use an extender cable for either the microphone lead or the USB lead).

Well, turns out I didn’t have to worry about the mircrophone connection anyhow, because the built-in microphone totally sucked on this webcam. Voice was like being in a muffled tin can – by far the worst of the webcams I’ve tried recently. There is a manual dial to focus the webcam around the lens (not mentioned anywhere in documentation)and it would be easy to knock this webcam off an LCD monitor because it doesn’t have much of a lip to hold on to the edge.

So, I used a separate microphone, trial and error focused the camera with my hand (if you get up to turn the dial you can’t very well stay 3 ft away and see if the focus is correct), and tweaked the settings a bit for skin tone color, and this was an acceptable webcam. Amazon – why not add “Built-in USB Data and 3.5mm Audio Cable” to your description, just like it says on the box ? Because it is NOT simply a 6′ USB cable. It does not have a USB microphone. For a cheaply priced webcam, this one is passable if you use your own microphone. I have no problems with the webcam image.

So far, the Microsoft HD-5000 webcam is one of the best for the price (approx ) that I’ve tried – but, and big but, the auto-focus went wild on the one I tried and I had to return it – others have had this random autofocusing problem with the same camera). The HD-5000 also puts strains on a Pentium computer (don’t run anything else) and its drivers and Skype seemed to have constant problems. This cheap Gear Head webcam should be no strain on even slower systems. It had no conflicts with Skype.

More Trouble Than It’s Worth, May 9, 2012

The video image is so-so at best. The cam is set atop my monitor, which is about 1.5-2′ away from my face, so I cannot get it to focus crisply due to it needing to be at least 3′ to do so (there is nowhere else for me to put it to be able to practically use it, so folks on the other end of video-chats have to deal with a fuzzy image). I haven’t used the mic because I already own a gaming headset, so I can’t speak to that.

My primary concern is that it is most certainly NOT Plug-and-Play! I have Windows 7, installed the driver from the disc that came with it, and it worked fine the first time. The second time I plugged the USB cord in, it gave me an error message that an unknown device was plugged it. This has continued the whole time I’ve owned it – every time I want to use the cam, I have to uninstall and reinstall the drivers. It’s not very good hardware to begin with, and when you add this ridiculous series of hoops to jump through just to Skype with friends or family, I’d advise you to buy a different product.

Short USB cord, software crashes, May 27, 2014

The USB cord is closer to about 4′ or less, not 6′ as the description says. Software bombs out continuously… I’m a systems engineer, know a thing or two about what I’m doing. Just an app crash every time I try and launch. Do a search, there is free web cam software out there that’s probably better anyway.
