It's not really loud, but it's enough to get someone's attention. And if you take the pressure off the switch plate (close the door), it stops immediately. It gives a quick, unobtrusive warning. If you're looking for an alarm that all your neighbors can hear, and that you have to pick it up to turn it off, this isn't the one for you. It might not work well for a motel room either.
