Safer, Cleaner Walkways

HeatTrak’s heating mats are the best solution for winter slip prevention, as they continuously melt snow and ice keeping surfaces constantly clear. And with a HeatTrak system in place there is no need for shoveling, leaving you with a happier back and healthier heart. Additionally, HeatTrak mats eliminate the need for salting entranceways, which can lead to messy floors indoors. HeatTrak mats also help preserve sidewalks, as calcium chloride will eat away at walkways over time.

Easily Portable, No Expensive Installations

With HeatTrak there is no need for expensive installations. HeatTrak mats are portable and designed to lie on top of existing surfaces. Just place a HeatTrak mat over existing walkways, stairs, entranceways, and ramps to provide a clean and safe passageway for foot and wheelchair access.

Durable and Safe

The engineers at HeatTrak have taken great care to develop a durable, safe, and effective snow and ice melting system, which can be left outside for the entire winter season. HeatTrak mats are made of an electrically operated heating element that’s sandwiched between two protective, waterproof surfaces, allowing them to endure harsh wear. They plug directly into any standard 120-volt outlet using their own ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI).

HeatTrak Snow-Melting System

With the HeatTrak snow-melting system, you can mix and match stair mats and walkway mats to create your perfect snow-melting solution. The heart of the system is the power unit (model HR-P, sold separately and required for power), which connects to a properly grounded, standard 120-volt electrical power outlet. The power unit enables you to connect a total of 15 amps, and a single power unit can connect up to 5 walkway mats (2.5 amps each) or up to 15 stair mats (0.6 amps each), or combine a mixture of the two so that the total comes to 15 amps or less. If your connected mats exceed 15 amps, you’ll have to split up the mats and use a second power unit plugged into a separate outlet.

Walkway mats measure 20 x 60 inches, and you’ll need one for every 5 feet of sidewalk (providing a space of approximately 3 inches between each mat). Sidewalk mats measure 10 x 30 inches, and you’ll need one for each stair. As an example, if you have a 20-foot walkway with three stairs, you’ll need four walkway mats, three stair mats, and one power unit (as the mats add up to 11.8 amps). The mats are daisy-chained to one another using male/female power connectors. (Note that residential mats cannot be connected to HeatTrak’s industrial products.)

The power unit has a 6-foot cable, but if your electrical outlet is beyond that reach, HeatTrak recommends using its 25-foot cable extender (model HR-EXT25) with a watertight seal–providing more protection against water and moisture than other outdoor-rated extension cords. Additionally, when you have a stairway mat connected to a walkway mat, you’ll need a 20-inch extender (model HR-EXT20).

Because they’re designed to be left outside all winter long, you can put your HeatTrak mats out before the winter starts and turn them on when you expect snow. For best results, turn on your HeatTrak mast at least 30 minutes before snowfall so that it melts snow on contact (turning on the mats after snowfall will take longer to melt). Then, keep the mats on a few hours after snow has stopped as you may have water runoff. The mats work effectively down to -5 degrees F and melt snow at approximately 2 inches per hour.

HeatTrak mats can be used on most surfaces, including concrete, asphalt, stone, and wood decks. However, decks made of plastic/composite material can act as an insulator, and use of HeatTrak mats can leave burn marking or staining. To avoid this, it’s best to operate the mat during snow fall hours and not leave them on for extended periods of time, or place strips of plywood under the mats to allow the heat to be properly distributed.

To operate the mats, you will need to go outside to turn them on via the power unit. To automatically control the mats from inside your home, you can purchase the optional wireless control outlet and switch (model HR-Wireless). Alternatively, you can purchase HeatTrak’s optional 10-inch thermostat extension cable (model HR-Therm3550), which plugs into the power unit from an electrical outlet and will automatically turn on your mats when the temperature drops below 35 degrees F. Another option is HeatTrak’s thermostat and snow sensing controller (model DS-2B), which turns on your mats when the temperature is below 38 degrees F and it senses moisture (requires hardwired installation by a certified electrician).

This review is from: HeatTrak HR10-30 Residential Snow-Melting Stair Mat, 10 Inch by 30 Inch, 120 Volt (Lawn & Patio)
We bought two of the HeatTrak HR10-30 Safety Tread Mats and several HeatTrak HR20-60 Residential Snow & Ice Heated Walkway Mat, 20-Inch by 5-Foot, 120 Volt to make a snow and ice free path from my front porch to our driveway. These mats require HeatTrak HR-P Residential Snow & Ice Heated Stair Mat Control Unit With 6-Foot Power Cord (not included) to control up to fifteen of these (or a combination of both mat types). These work as hoped, but one of the two units I received was defective (replaced quickly by Amazon). Here are my observations:

Pros –
+ Easy To Install; units connect easily via waterproof couplers (see picture in “Customer Images”)
+ Works Well; heated up to 80+ degrees Fahrenheit within 15 minutes

Cons –
– Ends Curl; unsecured ends curl up

We had sleet the day after getting these and the units made short work of melting the ice.

Recommended!

curled up edges are dangerous, January 3, 2013
Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: HeatTrak HR10-30 Residential Snow-Melting Stair Mat, 10 Inch by 30 Inch, 120 Volt (Lawn & Patio)
I had older versions of these Heattrak step warmers which are heavy rubber and I was happy with. I wanted more, but that version is no longer made. These however are flimsy and the edges curl up. They have been inside in the warm temp for 24 hours and still curl and I even had a weight on one end and it still curls. They SMELL like plastic. The old ones smelled like rubber. I am VERY unhappy about this purchase. If you could have experienced the old heavy rubber ones you would see that these new versions are crappy and cheaply made. If these don’t stop curling I will have to return them. I can’t secure the edges on stone steps and they are a safety hazard like this.

We purchased a walkway mat and 2 stair mats, which fortunately were delivered the day before a predicted snowstorm. They linked together easily and the curled-up ends flattened quickly after heating. The snowstorm arrived as predicted and the mats performed exactly as promised. 8″ of snow melted without problem and the mats were able to keep up with the snowfall rate of 1-2″ per hour. Safe footing on the steps and walkway to the garage make these a worthwhile expenditure!
