I did buy this as a refurbished unit. It's hard to maintain a real sharp focus, but easy to set up and use. The other problem I have is if I keep the camera plugged into the computer I sometimes get a blue screen that indicates a driver problem. This was the last device I installed so I can only assume that it's the webcam. While unplugged the problem never occurs. I tried uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them. I searched for new drivers and there are none. So I use it when I use SKYPE and unplug when done. None of my SKPE friends noticed the soft focus, so for what I paid is serves it's purpose.

Nice, but not in the sun, February 4, 2008

In looking for a camera to point out the window, I bought and tried this one. Not the right choice.

It does most things well--recognized by XP without drivers (shows up as a video input device under My Computer), very compact, nice picture quality, long cord, and a manual focus ring. It has an unobtrusive blue LED when powered on, and even connected via USB1 produced a high-framerate video stream.

But, when you try to use it in bright light--full sunlight or even cloudy daylight--the picture washes out badly and is basically useless. If you're using it for standard webcam stuff--sitting in front of your screen with maybe a light on in the room--it's a nice camera. Point it out the window, not so much.

Of course, most inexpensive webcams seem to do the same (lack of aperture control and adjusted to operate under very poor lighting, basically), so it's not necessarily worse than others in the category.

I didn't buy this off Amazon, but bought it second-hand. I found the video quality to be mediocre and the audio to be terrible. I'm also running it on a Mac, which isn't officially supported. I bought it for so I guess I can't complain too much. I did like the fact that you can manually focus the camera and the clamp seems to work quite well. I recommend it if video quality isn't a must have and you're ok with low quality audio.
